Carlos Díaz Miranda is a Chilean luthier based in Kraków, Poland. He is also a music teacher and classical guitarist. In his work as a luthier, he combines his experience as a musician and performer with the tradition of Spanish guitar making and his own approach to the design and construction of instruments.
His interest in guitar making initially led him to independently seek knowledge and explore the intricacies of instrument construction. He later completed a Spanish guitar-making course as part of Carlos Juan Busquiel’s “School of Guitar Makers”, after which he began building his own instruments. He also undertook specialised, hands-on training with Paco Chorobo, focusing on rosette making and traditional shellac French polishing techniques.
Each guitar is an individual project, designed and entirely handcrafted from start to finish. The aim is not to reproduce a single model, but to create each guitar as a unique instrument in which the choice of materials, construction and technical solutions serve the search for its own character and tonal possibilities. In his work, Carlos Díaz Miranda seeks to combine the distinctive sound of the traditional Spanish guitar with a more contemporary sonority.
The exhibition will feature two original classical guitars, entirely handcrafted and finished using traditional shellac French polishing. The first guitar features a spruce soundboard with maple back and sides. The instrument is inspired by the tradition and guitar-making school of Granada.
The second guitar features a cedar soundboard with Indian rosewood back and sides and incorporates more contemporary construction solutions, including a lattice bracing system.
Both instruments combine the distinctive character of traditional Spanish guitar making with an individual and contemporary approach to sound and construction.
