Anabel Montesinos / Yamandu Costa feat. Alessandro Penezzi
Anabel Montesinos / Yamandu Costa feat. Alessandro Penezzi
In the first part of the concert, we will hear Anabel Montesinos, a Spanish guitarist who has won many prestigious international competitions, notably becoming the youngest participant ever to win the Francisco Tárrega International Competition in Benicasim. She currently performs both solo and with orchestras worldwide, showcasing interpretative depth and exceptional virtuosity.
In addition to her classical repertoire, which spans from the Renaissance to contemporary music, on several occasions, she has also performed popular pieces, such as music by The Beatles or Queen. She records, performs, and plays a guitar named Jasmine, constructed in 2018 by the renowned luthier Steve Connor.
The second part of the concert will feature a performance by the critically acclaimed Yamandu Costa, who captivates audiences wherever he showcases his extraordinary skills and sound (including in Tychy in 2022). During his unforgettable performances, both solo and with orchestras, he enters into a rare symbiosis with his seven-string guitar. Carrying the essence of music from southern Brazil, he admirably blends it with various musical genres.
Despite his young age, Yamandu Costa has built a long and successful career. He was born in southern Brazil into a family of musicians. He made his stage debut as a vocalist at the age of 5, and a year later, his father gifted him his first guitar. At the age of 21, he received the Visa Instrumental Award, one of the most prestigious music awards in Brazil, which enabled him to record his first solo album. He then began a fruitful career, recording several solo albums as well as collaborating with other musicians. He has performed at numerous concerts in Brazil and worldwide, receiving important awards, including the Latin Grammy 2021 for Best Instrumental Album for Toquinho & Yamandu Costa – Bachianinha (live at the Rio Montreux Jazz Festival).
In 2024, Yamandu Costa will return to Poland to perform once again on our festival stage; however, this time he has invited Alessandro Penezzini, one of the greatest virtuosos of Brazilian guitar and a multi-instrumentalist who plays the mandolin, flute, seven-string guitar, tenor guitar, and cavaquinho, to join him for a collaborative performance. Costa emphasises that Penezzini, like himself, has been exposed to fusion music, and that the decision to collaborate came naturally. As a result of this collaboration, in 2017, they recorded the instrumental album Quebranto, which combines the roots of Latin, gypsy, and Brazilian choro music. It will be a magical meeting of two great artists who pay homage to Brazilian musical tradition, infusing it with a generous dose of Latin influences. The concert programme will feature pieces from the artists’ collaborative album titled Quebranto (2017), including tracks such as Capitão do Mato, Saracoteco, Amigo Boniha, and Dayana.
