Janusz Zbigniew Malina is a self-taught luthier and a passionate admirer of the Spanish tradition of classical guitar making. He holds a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering and began his journey into lutherie after retiring, when he decided to build his first guitar – an instrument which, as he admits, did not fully meet his expectations. Rather than becoming discouraged, he set out to deepen his knowledge of guitar construction and making, studying available literature and educational materials.

He is now completing his 18th classical guitar, modelled on a Hauser guitar. His work draws on the Spanish lutherie tradition, with particular attention paid to the selection of materials and the quality of craftsmanship.

For his instruments, he uses only tonewoods – spruce or cedar – while American walnut and sycamore maple are his primary choices for the sides and backs. His preferred finishing method is traditional French polishing with shellac.

His aim is to create good-quality classical guitars at affordable prices, particularly for students of primary and secondary music schools, as well as for other guitar enthusiasts. Each instrument is the result of knowledge acquired through self-study, practical experience and a longstanding fascination with the sound of the Spanish classical guitar.

During the 20th Silesian Guitar Autumn, visitors will have the opportunity to see his instruments and talk to him about their construction, the materials used and traditional guitar-making techniques on 22–23 October, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
