Rarely do we have an opportunity to experience Balkan folklore in such a spectacular way. Jakov Gotovac, who composed in the late Romantic style, approached the folk tradition with love, which is why, in the poem Symphonic Dance from 1927, the Serbian kolo can be heard from the first feisty chord. A similar fire characterises the extreme sections of Concierto Andaluz for four guitars and orchestra by Joaquín Rodrigo, though this time, the heart beats to the rhythm of the Spanish bolero. While it is not a fast dance, it is spirited and lively. The central Adagio evokes the landscapes of the South – those familiar with Andalusia will smell the olive groves and see the azure waves in the light of the Mediterranean sun. This is how the sightless Marqués de los Jardines de Aranjuez heard his homeland in 1967.
The finale of the symphonic evening will also take place under the Spanish sky, captured in the sound of a ballet suite from the grand opera Le Cid by Jules Massenet. Seventeenth-century France was captivated by Pierre Corneille’s drama about a mediaeval Castilian knight. Based on the drama, Massenet’s work received similar acclaim 200 years later. After its premiere, the opera was staged for 50 consecutive performances. It is to Corneille and Massenet that the French owe the famous and apt phrase 'as beautiful as the Cid.
